Kol HaLev’s story began In 2007 with Rabbi Geoff Basik and quickly grew to become a dynamic Baltimore-area synagogue. Cantor George Henschel joined the congregation in 2007 for its first High Holy Days services and soon became the beloved regular Cantor.
In 2010, Kol HaLev proudly embraced its identity as a Reconstructing Judaism synagogue. For nine memorable years, Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian Church on Charles Street served as its home, where Kol HaLev held Shabbat services, High Holy Day services, and various celebrations, including Pesach Seders, Chanukah festivities, and interfaith activities.
In 2017, Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian Church was put up for sale, so the congregation embarked on an exciting new chapter. Determined to find the perfect place, members of Kol HaLev explored potential locations; and Kol HaLev moved on June 27, 2018, to The Church of the Holy Comforter in Lutherville. Now, every Friday and Saturday in-person Shabbat services take place in the beautiful chapel at The Church of the Holy Comforter.
On January 1, 2021, Geoff Basik retired as Rabbi Emeritus of Kol HaLev, leaving a lasting legacy. Cantor George Henschel continued the leadership of Kol HaLev until June 2023 when Rabbi Steven Silvern, a congregant and retired Rabbi served as the Interim Rabbi of Kol HaLev assisted by Student Rabbi Emily Stern while the congregation searched for a special, full-time Rabbi to fill that role.
In 2024 Emily Stern became Kol HaLev’s Spiritual Director and Rabbi. Rabbi Emily is an ordained Rabbi and Mashpia (Jewish Spiritual Director) by the ALEPH Ordination Program.
Rabbi Emily is an inspiring leader of Kol HaLev, giving congregants space and encouragement to delve deeper into their own spiritual life. Rabbi Emily is also a writer, singer, songwriter, poet, and artist, and incorporates the creative arts and music into services at Kol HaLev, and her creative events she plans for the congregation.
In 2025, Cantorial soloist Mara Yaffee, an accomplished vocalist with an incredibly beautiful voice, and a graduate of the Peabody Musical Academy, joined Rabbi Emily. They continue to guide and inspire the congregation with exceptional leadership.
Today, Kol HaLev is a growing vibrant community attracting people of all ages, as well as diverse families who seek a nurturing, educational environment for raising Jewish children.
